The Morality of Sex Work vs. Food Service in February of 2015

I am a Theatre Person.

I have spent a good part of the last decade working on over 50 live performances – onstage and/ or backstage. I have been pursuing my theatre degree at the same secondary institution my high school drama department head matriculated, and only have one class to go (because ‘liberal arts core curriculum’ is for BA, not BFA). I am a Playwright, a Director, and the CEO of my own Production Company, which I endeavor to turn into a legit (read: non-pornographic) Audio and Video Empire.

With all of this experience in the entertainment industry, what do I do for a living at the ripe old age of 26?

Log on to a cam site where men pay to masturbate to me.

Some of my friends (the artists, mostly) think it’s cool I get to work from home, as long as I have an internet connection, and throw up the horns in tribute to me rocking the fuck out of my life. Everyone who ascribes to the way society endeavors to categorize people likes to tell me, “You’re better than that. Even waiting tables is better than what you’re doing now.”

Let me tell you why that isn’t true: Wellness mixed with a little bit of social awareness.

Unless the restaurant in question serves only organic food and is plastic-storage-and-serving-item-free, has nothing to do with Pepsico, I don’t want to be the lower-middleman who willingly delivers this shit to people. [As the hypocrite I am, I am currently finishing reheated crab rangoon with sweet and sour sauce – I felt morally compelled to indulge this information.] Even now, wanting to make sure you don’t eat anything that is full of carcinogens is considered a mental health disorder. Thanks, Monsanto!

In short, if you turn your back on low quality, corporate food containing known cancer causing toxic additives and a rich history of dishonesty rooted in a continuous “profits over people” modus operandi, then you may suffer from a mental illness. The cherry on top is that if you have the pseudo-science labeled disorder of orthorexia nervosa, you will be prescribed known toxic, pharmaceutical drugs from some of the same conglomerate corporations that you are trying to avoid by eating healthy in the first place.

Now, doing cam work, to simplify for the purpose of this article, I get two types of customers: the ones who just want to jack off and the ones who want a human connection.

It should be obvious why giving companionship to lonely people is helpful to society, but, in case it isn’t, here’s a few statistics:

  • According to a Dailymail article, “loneliness has around twice the impact on an early death as obesity. Its impact was nearly as high as that of poverty…”
  • According to CNN, loneliness can increase your risk of dementia, as well as cause sleep disruptions.

The ones who just want to jack off are the ones who, most likely, just wanna get it out of the way so they can nod off. Those Monsters!!!

Less visible consequences of sleep conditions are far more prevalent, and they take a toll on nearly every key indicator of public health: mortality, morbidity, performance, accidents and injuries, functioning and quality of life, family well-being, and health care utilization. Some of these consequences, such as automobile crashes, occur acutely within hours (or minutes) of the sleep disorder, and thus are relatively easy to link to sleep problems. Others—for example, obesity and hypertension—develop more insidiously over months and years of chronic sleep problems.

Even if the end game wasn’t ‘getting to sleep’, the health benefits of orgasms themselves are rightly registered. I won’t regurgitate it here, but enjoy this link to a(n?) ‘Huffington Post’ article on why orgasms are good for people.

So, now you know the logic behind the pride I take more pride in my work as a cam girl than I ever could working food service, the way it is now. They say ‘Money is the Root of All Evil’. I find myself in a world where you need money to survive, and those with money are doing something to harm others, in order to make it. “Fuck People Over or Die” is all I can hear and see and feel all around me. It makes me feel good to know I’m actually contributing to the health betterment of those who give me money.

The cam site I work at is wonderful – I don’t even have to get naked (unlike some of the other cam sites I used to work for), just show off a little cleavage and thigh while running my smart mouth. Sometimes I make $20 – $75 in tips, on top of my private cam rate, per customer.

Did I mention the whole ‘not having to leave my house in order to make money’ thing? That’s my other favorite part.

I make money to put on makeup, a costume, set up my lights and camera, and give a performance. I’m not even graduated yet, and I’m a professional actor!

In the words of Yolandi Visser, “I get real paid/ What you think I do this for?”
